Who are we? Stanchester Quire is a community choir of about 70 people,of all ages, created and nurtured by Folk South West under the musical direction of the well-known folk artist Eddie Upton.
We sing English Folk songs and carols, drawn mainly from the West Country, as far afield as Cornwall in the west, Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire in the east and Gloucestershire in the north.
We come from all walks of life, sing in harmony and normally without musical accompaniment. Many of our members do not read music, but all share the enjoyment of singing these wonderful old songs.
We perform concerts around the region and beyond and have featured in several CD recordings.
Why Quire and not Choir? The Quire were formerly the musicians and singers in the West Gallery of the church. They led the music.
Our Christmas programme is drawn from the rich traditions of “West Gallery carols” and local village carols. |
